Stephen William Hawking is a British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Directorof Research at the Centrefor Theoretical Cosmology within the University ofCambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose ongravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity, and the theoreticalprediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was thefirst to set forth a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativityand quantum mechanics. He is a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation ofquantum mechanics.
